Cleaning up old mines

Abandoned historical mines are polluting our water and communities, day after day, year after year.  Arizona is expected to have 100,000 of these old mines dotting our mountains and canyons – failed or depleted from gold rushes generations ago. Now they provide the backdrop to our outdoor recreation activities while causing a lot of water quality issues downstream.

However, the Good Samaritan Remediation of Abandoned Hardrock Mines Act (S.2781) seeks to remedy that pollution by allowing qualified organizations and state agencies with the know-how to clean up these mines to do just that.

Abandoned hardrock mines are a huge environmental liability, but nobody is responsible for these messes…unless someone wants to help fix the problem. Then they could be held legally responsible under the Clean Water Act and CERCLA for pollution they didn’t create, stopping remediation projects before they start. S. 2781 is a commonsense solution to this problem.
