Tom McDonald is passionate about Arizona’ public lands, evident in the way he operates his business – Smiling Dog Landscapes – to his work with outdoor nonprofit organizations.
Focused on sustainable landscaping, Smiling Dog Landscapes uses native plants wherever possible to encourage wise stewardship of water, as well as preserve and attract pollinators and other wildlife.
“If we can bring native plants and put them in your garden we can create stepping stones for animals to move in between places where they have few resources to those where there are far more”, said Tom.
“Even if people don’t understand plant biomes and how they support each other, they really can make a difference. Cultivating one native plant is good but if you plant a group, it really supports the whole ecosystem.”
Extending his commitment to Arizona’s sustainability, Tom partners with nonprofits like the NATURE Conservancy on projects like harvesting rainwater both passively and actively, mitigating heat islands with plants and protecting wildlife habitat.
“I’m looking forward to working with Get Outdoors Arizona and networking with other business owners to protect Arizona’s public lands,” added Tom. “I’m committed.”
